Description of the Qualification

This qualification covers the competencies required to translate special purpose texts from one language to another, to convey information written using specific terminology for a specific audience in functionally equivalent translated texts that are accurate and appropriate to the context, target audience and end use.

The Advanced Diploma of Translating prepares translators to translate texts where there may be significant equivalence problems between source and target text, the subject of the text has its own specific terminology, or there is need to undertake extensive research and translate complex language and concepts.

Entry Requirements

There are no specific entry requirements for this qualification outlined in the qualification description.
However, prior to enrolling in this course the students might either:

· have completed the PSP50816 Diploma of Interpreting, or the PSP50816 Diploma in Translating or a Diploma in a related field.

· have NAATI accreditation at para-professional level in the relevant language

· have proven and documented work experience in, or

· achieve a minimum score of 70% of the SIIT entry test, which is prepared and assessed according to NAATI professional interpreting standards.

The entry examination materials will be available upon request and the examination will be administered by NAATI accredited interpreters.

Delivery Arrangements

Students are required to complete 13 units of competency.
Delivery time-frames:
Approximate delivery hours required to complete the PSP60816 Advanced Diploma of Translating are between 800-1000 hours.
Attendance and academic progress are monitored throughout the duration of the course.

Assessment Arrangements

A range of assessment and evidence gathering methods and techniques are used, including 2 – 4 or more methods for each unit of competency. For this course, methods include:

· Questions and answers

· Case studies/scenario discussions

· Multiple choices/true or false questions

· Interpreting and reflection tasks

· Simulated interpreting practice

· Writing reports/essays

· Formal examinations

NAATI Endorsement

This qualification is a NAATI endorsed qualification.
