Introduction to CEC

I. Review

CEC is open to all young children across the world. It is now defined as the level of knowledge reserve and basic ability in China’s Translation Ability Test System.

Making full use of the established platforms in China’s Translation Ability Test System and based on young children's learning and cognitive development pattern, CEC attracts young children all over the world who are loving Chinese culture to learn Chinese and how to do translations between Chinese and their mother tongues by way of scientific and effective testing methods, thus providing a platform of cultural exchange and communication for all young children across the world to have a full understanding and perception of China and the Chinese culture.

For the purpose of spreading Chinese culture and promoting people-to-people exchanges, CEC is open to all young children both at home and abroad with an aim to build a bridge for friendly exchanges between the Chinese and foreign young children.

Once having reached a certain level, CEC candidates may establish their personal foreign language ability files on China’s Foreign Language Talent Information Exchange Platform of China Foreign Language Community.

II. Candidates
Young children worldwide are eligible for the test.

In 2021, CEC will be held synchronously in multiple countries and regions all over the world.

III. Test Levels and Forms
CEC sets a total of three test levels and the levels from high to low are 1, 2 and 3. Test Level 1 and 2: each composed of two papers for oral and written tests with a total score of 200 points and 100 points for each paper. Division will be made into 5 grades of ABCDE based on the total score and the scores of oral and written tests.

Grade A:gaining a total score of 160-200 points and 80% of the full marks of both oral and written tests;
Grade B:gaining a total score of 140-159 points;
Grade C:gaining a total score of 120-139 points;
Grade D:gaining a total score of 90-119 points;
Grade E:gaining a total score of 60-89 points.
Test Level 3: It is an oral test in form with a total score of 100 points and divided into 5 grades of ABCDE based on the test results.
Grade A:gaining a total score of 80-100 points;
Grade B:gaining a total score of 70-79 points;
Grade C:gaining a total score of 60-69 points;
Grade D:gaining a total score of 45-59 points;
Grade E:gaining a total score of 30-44 points.

IV. Test Composition

Note: Listening comprehension is set in the written tests of CEC Test Level 1 and Level 2.

V. Academic Committee
CEC has set up an academic committee composed of more than 20 well-known experts and scholars with Chen Mingming, Excutive Vice Chairman of Translators Association of China, serving as the chairman. The committee is also composed of other well-known Chinese and foreign experts in the field of young children’s education and assessment.

VI. Test Organization
CEC is co-hosted by CATTI Management Center of China Foreign Languages Publishing Administration, the Talent Evaluation Committee of Translators Association of China as well as China Internet News Center, and it is co-sponsored by over 2,000 universities, primary and secondary schools, international schools, Han Culture centers and other institutions both at home and abroad. VII. Test Registration Candidates may log on to the CEC official website for registration, and the registration time is subject to the official announcement.

VIII. Test Languages
In 2021, the test languages will be Chinese and English with other languages to be opened later in succession.

IX. Score Report and Certificate

CEC candidates may download their electronic score reports from the CEC official website one month after the test.

The candidates of grades A, B, and C will get their certificates co-issued by CATTI Management Center of China Foreign Languages Publishing Administration and Talent Evaluation Committee of Translators Association of China.

X. Validity
An authoritative test.
CEC, open to all young children across the world, is China’s first test for translation and interpretation between
Chinese and other foreign languages. 

A global test. CEC is co-sponsored by more than 2,000 universities, primary and secondary schools, international schools, Han Culture centers and other institutions both at home and abroad. The pilot tests in 2021 will be held in countries like China, the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Malaysia, Singapore as well as HKSAR
and Macau SAR.

A theme-orientation test. The contents of CEC test papers mainly take Chinese elements as the theme with an integration of the local distinctive culture so as to build a platform for cultural exchanges between the Chinese and foreign young children.

A practical test. CEC focuses on testing young children's foreign language ability of practice. The candidate who has obtained certificates may apply for establishing his/her personal foreign language ability file in the Chinese Foreign Language Talent Information Exchange Platform. All information, recorded in the applicant own file with regard to his/her experiences of foreign language learning, testing, practice and certificates, will be used to prove the candidate’s foreign language ability in case of his/her future admission, employment, studying abroad, promotion and other occasions.
